STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLE PURSUIT ARRESTS

At approximately 0224 hours on Thursday, June 21, 2018, Officer William Phayre and Officer Michael McMahon were on patrol when they observed a red, 2002 Jeep Liberty attempting to enter Route 17 North the wrong way via the exit ramp at Essex Street. Officer Phayre and Officer McMahon conducted a license plate inquiry on the Jeep Liberty at which time they received an alert that the vehicle was stolen from Garfield earlier that evening. The officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The Jeep Liberty failed to yield to their patrol vehicle and attempted to flee the area northbound on Route 17. The Jeep Liberty then abruptly stopped in the left lane of Route 17 North in Paramus at which time two suspects fled the vehicle and ran across the highway.

After a brief foot pursuit, Officer Phayre and Officer McMahon arrested one juvenile passenger from the Jeep Liberty. Officers from the Rochelle Park Police Department and Paramus Police Department assisted in the search for the driver of the vehicle. Rochelle Park Police Officers located the second juvenile suspect at the Holiday Inn in Paramus, NJ.

Both juveniles were charged with eluding with a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools. The juveniles were charged with juvenile delinquency complaints and turned over to their guardians pending their future appearance in Juvenile Court.

These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
