K-9 UNIT

In May of 2016, the Maywood Police Department developed its first ever K-9 Unit and the only one of its kind in the history of Bergen County Law Enforcement, consisting of a Bloodhound dog and K-9 Officer.

Bloodhounds are highly specialized law enforcement K-9’s that trail humans.  They have unique capabilities that no other K-9’s have and are known as the most effective K-9 at tracking human scent.  They are able to distinguish the scent trail of one human being from that of another, up to many hours and even days later, over vast distances.

A K-9 that can distinguish between the scent of the person sought by police and that of the general public will aid in expediting criminal investigations, locating lost or missing individuals in a timely fashion and minimizes the chance of the wrong person being tracked.

Bloodhounds are utilized in some of the most high profile investigations involving missing persons and crimes.  This includes missing persons suffering from cognitive disabilities (Alzheimer’s, Autism, etc.), missing children and missing adults.  Additionally, Bloodhounds are often used in criminal investigations involving serious crimes.  In an area such as Maywood and Bergen County, where there is much human and vehicle contamination, Bloodhounds are highly effective and useful.

In February of 2019, seeing a need within the Borough, the Maywood Police Department expanded is K-9 Unit to include a German shepherd trained in Narcotics Detection and Patrol, which consists of:

  • Criminal apprehension

  • Handler protection

  • Article searches

  • Building searches

  • Deterrence

Currently, the Maywood Police Department K-9 Unit consists of two K-9’s,  K-9 Phoenyx #K9-4 (Bloodhound) and K-9 Ryker #K9-3 (German Shepherd).  Both K-9’s meet the training standards set forth by the New Jersey Attorney General Office on K-9 Training and/or the National Police Bloodhound Association.  The K-9 Unit receives many donations to keep it cost-effective, including veterinary care and dog food.  The unit is available for demonstrations upon request.
