MAYWOOD RESIDENT CHARGED WITH DISTRIBUTION OF CDS

On October 16, 2020, members of the Maywood Police Department, Maywood Police K-9 Unit, New Jersey State Police and Bergen County Regional SWAT Team executed a search warrant at an East Central Avenue residence, which resulted in the arrest of Jabian Ortiz, 45, of Maywood, for various charges related to drug distribution.

In June 2020, detectives from the Maywood Police Department initiated an investigation into Mr. Ortiz after receiving information that he was distributing narcotics from his East Central Avenue apartment. During the course of the investigation, Maywood detectives were contacted by detectives from the New Jersey State Police Gangs & Organized Crimes Unit in regards to a separate investigation they were conducting involving Mr. Ortiz. With the information developed from these investigations, the NJSP obtained a search warrant for Mr. Ortiz’s apartment in August 2020. During the execution of this search warrant, over 200 grams of cocaine, over 50 grams of marijuana, drug packaging materials and $23,000 in US currency were recovered. The NJSP charged Mr. Ortiz with Maintaining/Operating a Drug Production Facility and various other drug charges. He was lodged at the Bergen County Jail and later released.

In September 2020, Maywood detectives received information that Mr. Ortiz continued to engage in narcotics distribution after his release from the Bergen County Jail. Detectives re-opened the investigation and soon obtained a second search warrant for Mr. Ortiz’s apartment. During the execution of this search warrant, marijuana, anabolic steroids, drug paraphernalia and $8,000 in suspected drug proceeds were seized.

Mr. Ortiz was arrested and transported to Maywood Police Headquarters where he was charged with distribution of cocaine, possession of cocaine, possession of anabolic steroids, financial facilitation of criminal activity, possession of marijuana/under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic needles/syringes. He was lodged at the Bergen County Jail pending a future court hearing.

These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Maywood Police Department would like to thank the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and the New Jersey State Police for their assistance.
