MAYWOOD RESIDENT ARRESTED AFTER STEALING & BURNING FLAG

On Monday, September 21, 2020, the Maywood Police Department arrested Mazin Musbah, 25, of Maywood, for Theft of Movable Property, Defiant Trespass, Criminal Trespass and Desecration of a Public Monument. Mr. Musbah’s arrest stemmed from an investigation into multiple reports of vulgar notes left on resident’s vehicles and area street signs during the overnight hours of Friday, September 18th.

On September 19th, the Saddle Brook Police Department notified our agency that they arrested Mr. Musbah after he damaged numerous Police vehicles in the parking lot of their Headquarters. During the course of damaging the vehicles, Mr. Musbah left notes similar to the ones located throughout Maywood.

Further investigation into Mr. Musbah revealed that he posted several photographs and videos on social media of himself trespassing on private property in Maywood. In the posts, Mr. Musbah documented himself stealing an American Flag from a Firefighter’s Memorial located in front of the Maywood Fire Department’s Peerless Engine Company Headquarters on West Hunter Avenue. Mr. Musbah proceeded to post a video of himself burning the flag.

Detectives arrested Mr. Musbah at his residence and questioned him at Police Headquarters where he indicated that his actions were in response to an anti-government sentiment he recently developed from watching the news.

Mr. Musbah was released from custody pending his future court appearance.

These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
