MAILBOX THEFT INVESTIGATION NETS MULTIPLE ARRESTS

The Maywood Police Department announces the arrests of 15 defendants related to a mailbox theft that occurred on August 19, 2019.

On the morning of August 19, 2019, at 3:23 am, Officers were dispatched to the United States Postal Service mailbox located at the intersection of West Pleasant Avenue and Wyoming Avenue for a report of suspicious activity. A resident notified the Police after observing multiple individuals prying open the mailbox and fleeing in a vehicle. Responding Officers discovered that the mailbox had been forcibly pried open and its entire contents were removed. Over the course of the next several weeks, more than a dozen victims reported fraudulent activity involving checks that were placed in the mailbox during the days leading up to the theft. Many of the checks were altered and deposited into various bank accounts. The total amount of funds deposited from these checks exceeded $40,000.

The Maywood Police Detective Bureau conducted an investigation that spanned several months which led to the arrests of the following individuals for various charges including theft, receiving stolen property, and forgery;

Edwing E. Guzman, 27, Bronx, NY

Norka A. Ruiz, 32, New York, NY

Christopher M. Pimentel, 20, Paterson

Victor M. Grullon, 24, Paterson

Rafael U. Reyes-Zapata, 21, Paterson

Yerald S. Sanchez-Almonte, 23, Paterson

Luisa V. Gomez-Valdez, 31, Glendale, Arizona

These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
