SPECIAL POLICE

The Maywood Special Police,
established in 1941, is currently made up of 19 volunteer members and are
under the Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
These
volunteers assist the Police Department throughout the year in numerous
details ranging from traffic control, crowd control at special events, or
at time when natural disasters occur.
The Special
Police Liaison is P.O. Glenn Tutschek of the Maywood Police
Department. It is his responsibility to assign the many details for
the membership during the course of the year. He is also responsible for
training and equipment. The Special Police Captain is Kenneth Terzo, the
highest ranking officer in the organization. His responsibilities
include the coordination of details to the members of the organization,
and to assist the OEM director should an emergency occur.
Some of the
details that the organization participates in include the Maywood Basketball Tournament, Annual Sidewalk sale,
MAD CAP dances, coordinate traffic control for our Fourth of July Parade,
and the National Night Out Program. These are just a few of the crowd and
traffic control details that were handled by the organization. They
augmented the Police department’s patrol during a busy time of the year,
this being Mischief and Halloween Nights. The members are assigned patrol
units and sectors and are responsible for occurrences in their areas.
The
Special Police are also responsible for regulating the flow of
traffic along Maywood Ave. on Sunday mornings, at Our Lady Queen of Peace
Church.
Currently,
the organization is a member of the North Jersey Civil Defense Police
Pistol League (NJCDPPL). They shoot in home and away matches during the
Spring and Fall. The team received top honors in 1996 for being the top
team in the league.
The Maywood
Special Police is currently looking for interested persons to join the
organization. To be a member, you must be a resident of Maywood, 18 years
of age, and in good physical condition. If interested, contact the Maywood
