a group of people organized as a neighborhood-based team that receives special training to enhance their ability to recognize, respond to, and recover from emergency or disaster situations. The members of the Maywood CERT team train to protect themselves and their families, and to be assistance to the community in times of emergency. Maywood CERT training includes:
The Community Emergency Response Team concept was developed and implemented by the City of Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985. The department recognized that citizens would very likely be on their own during the early stages of a catastrophic disaster and that, with some basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills, they would be better able to survive and help others until responders or other assistance could arrive.
Maywood CERT was formed in September of 2005 under the umbrella of the township's Office of Emergency Management (OEM). There are currently approximately 25 volunteer members that meet monthly to compare notes and obtain additional emergency training. We also participate in disaster drills conducted by Maywood, neighboring towns, and the county.
Recently the team assisted locally by collecting water for Hurricane Katrina victims, assisting the MPD with the Annual 5K run, and directing traffic during the 4th of July parade.
